Earlier automation gave machines the ability to replace physical labor with mechanical repetition; AI and robotics together are now giving machines the ability to decide; taking over the judgement calls on quality, maintenance, and optimization that once belonged exclusively to experienced engineers.

The core technology stack that is underpinning this transformation includes – Computer Vision & Deep Learning (cameras and sensors combined with neural networks that can inspect, classify, detect defects, etc.); Collaborative Robots (Cobots, to work alongside humans ); Digital Twins (real-time virtual replicas that allow simulation, optimisation, and predictive intervention); Generative AI in Engineering (to designs components, optimizes layouts, and generates process parameters); Autonomous Mobile Robots (AMRs that self-navigate and handle intra-factory logistics) and Predictive Maintenance (AI models trained on sensor data that predict equipment failure before it occurs).

Global manufacturers have moved well beyond pilots into scaled AI deployment across the value chain. BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Toyota are applying AI to welding paint inspection, and intra-plant logistics respectively; Foxconn and Siemens are using it to drive PCB inspection accuracy and SMT yield optimisation in electronics. In India, Tata Steel, Reliance, Mahindra, and Kaynes Technology are deploying AI across rolling mills, refineries, assembly-line quality control, and PCB inspection, adoption has now moved firmly into the operational mainstream.

Other application areas include – Pharma (in Drug Discovery, Sterile Fill-Finish, Track-and-Trace), Food Manufacturing (Sorting & Grading, Robotic Picking & Packing, Contamination Detection, Demand-Driven Production Scheduling), Aerospace & Defence Manufacturing (Composite Inspection, Precision Machining, Quality Traceability), Steel Processing (Rolling Mill Optimisation, Predictive Maintenance, Scrap Sorting), Textile Manufacturing (Automated Cutting, Fabric Defect Detection, Robotic Sewing).

In all the implementations, the common thread is targeted deployment across high-impact nodes like, quality, maintenance, and throughput – driving measurable operating leverage. AI is driving next generation manufacturing use cases across core operational levers.

  • India–New Zealand FTA targets doubling bilateral trade to ~$5bn over five years, with duty elimination on 8,284 Indian export lines. Primary beneficiaries include agriculture, dairy, textiles, pharmaceuticals, and services (IT, education), supported by supply chain diversification.
  • Sun Pharmaceutical Industries is set to acquire U.S. drugmaker Organon & Co in an all-cash deal valued at ~$11.75Bn, including debt.
  • OpenAI has closed a massive ~$122Bn round, at a ~$852Bn valuation. Funding includes investments from Amazon, NVIDIA, and SoftBank
  • India’s Manufacturing PMI fell to a 4-year low of 53.9 in March 2026 from 56.9 in February, slower growth is due to high-cost pressures
  • Amidst high oil prices, and strong FII selloffs, the Indian rupee is seeing a strong decline reaching a low of ₹94.14 per US dollar
